Living Out Islam Voices of Gay Lesbian and Transgender Muslims Scott Siraj alHaqq Kugle Books Reviews
- Sometimes you need to just hear voices and stories of people who UNDERSTAND. Who understand what you're going through, and this book is so incredibly important because of this
- Easy to read and follow. Glad that this topic is brought up and discussed.
- This book was designed to let the world know that all kinds of lives are out there that each individual has their story and needs to tell it whatever the effect may be. Scott Kugle had interviewed dozens of Muslims on a scale of LGBTQ (I apologize if I am missing any), and has honed in on what their life was like before, during and after they had "come out" to friends and family. The harshness they had to evade was powerful, the indoctrination of their surrounds was intense. . . so stepping out and being who you are was frowned upon. No matter the belief you have, this read will make you feel transparent toward some of the cruelty in this book, and you will want to stop being a bystander and do something about it. I study religions, and Islam is among my favorite. . .and that is the beauty of this belief system, there is interpretation, wonder, mystery. If we were to have ALL THE ANSWERS like most of us feel we have already been accompanied by, then what is the purpose of continuing when no more questions can be asked? Idealogical and dogmatic approaches in this book become crumbled once these interviewees faith skyrockets off the pages. Great read, fantastic interviews, before and after stories. Leave judgment outside when you are reading this much of what you are about to read will anger or frighten you, but I am no parent--so I could never understand, only ask questions. I give this book 5 stars because of each story written in it. . .each story intertwines with one another till the end of the read this gives you an idea how we are all connected no matter the differences or beliefs.
